Aesthetic filling is a meticulous way of rebuilding a tooth that preserves as much healthy tissue as possible. It suits not only teeth affected by decay, but also those that have lost their natural colour, worn down heavily, chipped after an injury or come through in the wrong position. It is also how we close gaps between the front teeth.
We work with high-quality composite materials that reproduce the colour, translucency and gloss of a natural tooth. The tooth is built up layer by layer, which is what makes the filling completely invisible.
When does a tooth need a filling?
Early decay does not hurt, so we often find it during a check-up. See a dentist if:
- The tooth reacts to sweet, cold or hot food.
- You see a dark spot or a small hole where food gets stuck.
- An edge of the tooth has chipped or an old filling has fallen out.
- An old filling has darkened or gaps have appeared at its edges.
- Your front teeth are worn, have gaps or uneven colour.

How is a filling done?
One tooth is usually finished in a single visit.

We assess how large the damage is and take an X-ray if needed. It shows decay between teeth and under old fillings.

Anaesthetic
We numb the tooth with a local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain during treatment.

Isolation
We isolate the tooth with a rubber dam to keep the area dry, because this decides how long the filling will last.

Removing the decay
We remove only the damaged tissue and keep as much healthy tooth as possible.

Building it up in layers
The filling material goes in thin layers, each hardened with light, recreating the colour and translucency of the tooth.

Bite check and polish
We check that the filling does not get in the way when you bite and polish it to a natural shine.

The price depends on the size of the damage and how many surfaces of the tooth need restoring. A small filling on a chewing surface needs a few layers, while an aesthetic restoration of front teeth takes more shades and more time. The anaesthetic and rubber dam are charged separately.

How long does a filling last?
A good composite filling usually lasts 5-10 years, and longer with good care. Its lifespan depends on its size, your bite, hygiene and habits such as cracking nuts or grinding your teeth.

Can I eat straight after a filling?
A light-cured filling is hard immediately. Still, wait for the anaesthetic to wear off (2-3 hours) so you do not bite your cheek or lip by accident.

How is an aesthetic filling different from a regular one?
In an aesthetic filling the tooth is rebuilt in several layers of different shades and translucency, and its shape and surface are modelled in detail. The result is a filling you cannot see even up close. This matters most for front teeth.

Can old fillings be replaced?
Yes. If an old filling has darkened, gaps have appeared at its edges or decay has formed underneath, we remove it and rebuild the tooth with tooth-coloured material.

When is a filling enough, and when do I need an inlay or crown?
A filling works when plenty of healthy tooth remains. If more than half of a molar is broken down or its walls are thin, a ceramic inlay or a crown is the more durable choice, as they handle chewing forces better.

Does a filling hurt?
Not with a local anaesthetic. Afterwards the tooth may be a little more sensitive to cold for a few days, especially if the decay was deep.
