Periodontitis is an insidious disease of the gums and supporting tissues that can appear at any age. The main cause of the inflammation is bacteria accumulating in the mouth, hiding in soft plaque and hard tartar. If that plaque is not removed in time, the inflammation works its way deeper, damages the bone supporting the tooth, and over time a person can lose even entirely healthy teeth.
A poor diet, hormonal disturbances, genetics and general health conditions all contribute to the disease. Periodontitis is treated here by a whole medical team (a periodontist, a dentist and a prosthodontist), so we can assess the situation from every angle and choose the best course of action.
Signs of gum disease
Periodontitis develops slowly and does not hurt for a long time, so it matters to recognise the early signs:
- Gums bleed when you brush or chew.
- Gums are red, swollen or tender.
- Persistent bad breath or an unpleasant taste.
- Gums have receded, teeth look longer and their necks are sensitive.
- Gaps have appeared between teeth, or teeth have started to shift.
- Teeth feel loose or your bite has changed.

We begin with deep removal of plaque and tartar to eliminate the main source of infection, and we show you how to clean your teeth properly at home.

Treating pockets
Where inflammation has already formed deep periodontal pockets, we clean and treat them so the gum can reattach to the tooth.

Stabilising loose teeth
As bone is lost, teeth can start to loosen. We splint such teeth into a single unit, or discuss prosthetic solutions.

Ongoing maintenance
Periodontitis is a chronic disease, so after treatment we invite you back every few months for a check-up and hygiene appointment to keep the inflammation from returning.
Gum disease treatment prices in Vilnius
The cost depends on the stage of the disease and how many teeth are affected. At the first visit we measure the depth of the gum pockets, check the bone on an X-ray and then draw up a plan. Deep pocket cleaning (curettage) is charged per tooth.

Frequently asked questions about gum disease

Can periodontitis be cured?
Periodontitis is a chronic disease, so the aim is not a complete cure but stopping it. With timely treatment and regular maintenance cleanings the inflammation can be controlled and the teeth kept for many years.

What is the difference between gingivitis and periodontitis?
Gingivitis is surface inflammation of the gums that clears up with thorough hygiene. Periodontitis begins when the inflammation reaches the tissues and bone that hold the tooth. Lost bone does not grow back on its own, so it is important not to wait.

Can loose teeth be saved?
Often, yes. Once the inflammation is reduced, teeth frequently firm up, and looser ones can be joined into a single block (splinted). Whether a tooth is worth saving depends on how much bone is left.

Is curettage painful?
Deep pocket cleaning is done under local anaesthetic, so it is painless. The gums may be more sensitive for a few days afterwards.

How often should I come back after treatment?
Usually every 3-4 months. At each maintenance visit we clear new deposits from the pockets before they can cause inflammation again.

Do smoking and diabetes make a difference?
Yes, a big one. Smoking reduces blood flow in the gums and masks bleeding, so the disease goes unnoticed for longer. Uncontrolled diabetes speeds up inflammation, and research shows that treating the gums also makes blood sugar easier to control.
