Children's dentistry at Adadenta dental clinic

Children's dentistry without fear

A first visit to the dentist shapes how a child will feel in the chair for the rest of their life. That is why we never rush our youngest patients: we show them the instruments, explain what is going to happen, and start only once the child feels safe. Milk teeth matter just as much as permanent ones, because they hold the space for the teeth to come and determine a correct bite.

When the permanent molars come through, the risk of decay rises sharply: the fissures on their chewing surfaces are deep and narrow, and hard to clean with an ordinary brush. To protect those teeth from early decay we use sealants, a long-proven preventive measure.

When should your child see a dentist?

The first time when the first teeth appear, then for a check-up every six months. Don't put off a visit if:

  • You see chalky white or brown spots on the teeth.
  • Your child complains of pain with sweet, cold or hot food.
  • The gum or cheek is swollen.
  • A permanent tooth is coming through but the baby tooth has not fallen out and is not loose.
  • A tooth has chipped or become loose after a fall.
  • Teeth are coming in crooked or the bite does not close properly.

What we do for young patients

  1. 01

    Fissure sealing

The deep fissures of the molars are filled with a flowable material. Once set, it creates a smooth surface that plaque cannot cling to. No drilling is needed, so children are not the least bit afraid of this one.

  2. 02

    Treating milk teeth

We treat and fill milk teeth affected by decay, so the child is free of pain and the permanent teeth come through in the right place.

  3. 03

    Fluoride applications

These strengthen the not-yet-mature enamel of a child's tooth and reduce the risk of decay between visits.

  4. 04

    Hygiene and coaching

We show the child how to brush properly, and talk to parents about the dietary habits that most affect how teeth hold up.

What happens at the first visit?

The first visit is less about treatment and more about getting to know each other, so that next time your child comes without fear.

  1. Getting to know us

We let your child look around, sit in the chair and touch the instruments. If they are very nervous, we start with play therapy.

  2. Check-up

We count the teeth, check for decay and look at how the bite is developing.

  3. Talking with parents

We show you how to brush for your child's age and talk about diet, fluoride toothpaste and dummy or bottle habits.

  4. A plan

If treatment is needed, we make a plan and begin with the simplest procedures so your child can get used to it step by step.

A filling in a baby tooth costs €30-50, and a fissure sealant €15 per tooth. If your child is very frightened, the first visit can be play therapy: they get to know the surgery, and we start treatment next time.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions from parents

  • When should my child first see a dentist?

When the first teeth appear, and no later than around the first birthday. An early visit helps spot decay in time and lets your child get used to the surgery while nothing hurts.

  • Do baby teeth need treating if they fall out anyway?

Yes. Baby teeth hold the space for permanent ones, and untreated decay causes pain and inflammation and can damage the permanent tooth forming underneath. Some baby molars stay in the mouth until age 11-12.

  • How can I prepare my child for the visit?

Speak calmly and positively and avoid words like "hurt" or "needle". Don't use the dentist as a threat, and don't promise that "nothing will be done". Morning appointments work best, when your child is rested.

  • What are sealants, and do they hurt?

Sealants are a liquid material that fills the deep grooves of back teeth. There is no drilling, it takes a few minutes and is completely painless. They are best placed soon after the permanent molars come through, at around ages 6-7 and 11-13.

  • When does a child need an orthodontist?

We recommend a first orthodontic consultation at age 7-8, even if the teeth look straight. If we notice bite problems, we refer you to a children's orthodontist.

  • Can parents stay in the room?

Yes. For little ones it often gives a sense of safety. Older children are sometimes encouraged to go in alone, as they then talk to the dentist more independently. We decide together with you.
