Oral surgery covers a broad range of procedures, from a complex extraction to removing a cyst or reshaping soft tissue. The thought of surgery makes many people anxious, but modern technology, effective anaesthesia and experienced specialists mean these procedures can be carried out safely, precisely and as comfortably as possible.

When is an oral surgeon needed?

Most patients are referred to the surgeon by their general dentist, once a more complex problem has been identified.

    Wisdom tooth removal

    One of the most common procedures, particularly when wisdom teeth are impacted or are coming through at an angle and pressing on the neighbouring teeth.

    Complex extraction

    When a tooth is badly damaged, broken below the gum line or has curved roots, surgical access is required.

    Root-end resection

    Surgical removal of a chronic inflammation at the tip of the root, carried out in order to save the tooth itself.

    Removal of cysts that have formed in the jaw, before they can damage the surrounding bone and the neighbouring teeth.

    Soft tissue procedures

    Lip and tongue-tie release and gum contouring, often needed before prosthetic or orthodontic treatment.

How is a tooth removed?

A simple extraction takes a few minutes; a difficult wisdom tooth takes longer. The steps are similar either way.

  1. X-ray

    Before extraction we look at the shape and position of the roots. With wisdom teeth it matters how close they sit to the nerve or the sinus.

  2. Anaesthetic

    We give a local anaesthetic and wait until it has fully taken effect. For very anxious patients we can offer sedation.

  3. Extraction

    We carefully loosen and remove the tooth. A tooth with several roots or one that has not erupted is often divided into parts, which spares the surrounding bone.

  4. Caring for the wound

    We clean the socket, stitch it if needed and place a gauze pad for you to bite on.

  5. Aftercare advice

    We explain what to do over the first few days and, if needed, book a check-up or stitch removal.

Tooth extraction prices in Vilnius

A simple extraction costs €70-80 and a complicated one €80-150. Complicated means a broken tooth, one with several curved roots or one that has not erupted, most often a wisdom tooth. We give you the exact price after looking at the X-ray.

Healing after the procedure

Good healing depends on proper aftercare, so every patient is given clear instructions: keep biting on the gauze pad for 30-60 minutes, apply a cold compress over the operated area, eat only soft, cool food for the first day, do not rinse the mouth, and for a few days avoid heavy exercise, saunas and smoking. Mild pain and swelling on the first day are normal. But if bleeding increases, your temperature rises, or a strong throbbing pain appears after 2-3 days, contact us immediately.

Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions about tooth extraction

  • Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

    No. If a wisdom tooth has come through straight, meets a tooth on the opposite jaw and can be cleaned well, it can stay. We recommend removing it when it keeps inflaming the gum, presses on the neighbouring tooth, has decay, or has not erupted and is causing problems.

  • Does having a tooth pulled hurt?

    Not during the procedure, because the tooth is numbed. Once the anaesthetic wears off there can be aching and swelling for a few days, which ordinary painkillers handle well.

  • When can I eat after an extraction?

    After about two hours, once the numbness is gone. For the first day choose soft, cool food and chew on the other side. Avoid hot drinks and hard or spicy food for a few days.

  • What is a dry socket?

    It is when the blood clot comes out of the socket and the bone is left exposed. Two to four days later a strong pain appears that can spread to the ear. The risk is highest for smokers and for people who rinse their mouth on the first day. If you feel this pain, come back and we will clean and dress the socket.

  • Can a tooth be removed while it is inflamed?

    Usually yes, as modern anaesthetics work even when there is inflammation. If there is a large abscess, we drain it first and remove the tooth once the inflammation settles. We decide after examining you.

  • Is sedation available?

    Yes, for very anxious patients we offer sedation, a medication-induced state of calm in which you stay conscious. We arrange it in advance, as you will not be able to drive that day.

  • Can I get a certificate for work or school?

    Yes, we can issue a certificate after the procedure. Mention it during your visit; its price is in the price list.
